Basic Folk 08 – Anais Mitchell

Powered by RedCircle

Anais Mitchell is about to hit Broadway with Hadestown! But first! The Vermont songwriter is on Basic Folk. Her folk opera, Hadestown, set to open at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway March 2019.

Anais tells me about her childhood on a sheep farm in Vermont, growing up without a TV, and her parents brushing shoulders with Leonard Cohen on a Grecian island. She unpacks her love and loyalty in her collaborations and the mystical way she found her visual artist for Hadestown. Anais explains the importance of belonging to a musical community like Club Passim or the small cafe in Vermont in which Hadestown was born. Lastly, we talk about 3rd and 4th wave feminism and where she fits as a feminist and boundary shattering musician. Don’t forget to subscribe!
